Visit at the Peto Institute – 24 November 2011 – Budapest

In the 24 November morning we have visited the Peto Institute.

The Institute is located in the city of Budapest and it is accessible by public transport. It is a big one building and for the first impression I thought It was a chilly environment, more suitable for adult than child. It look like a college school. In the building there are not any architectural barriers.
After a brief visit at the institute, the organizers have divided us into two groups in order to visit and observe two different activities that are carried out to the Peto Institute.

I have visited the “Mother and Child Group” .
This group is for children with special needs and their mother. In the group there were two conductors, they work in the group with the conductive education program. We entered in the room and we sat down to look for the activity.
The conductors were doing some exercises with mother and child useful for the children’s rehabilitation. There are many toys in the room, useful for the exercise. All the toys are very engaging for the children. Usually take part at the group 8 child with 8 mother, in that occasion there were only 3 children with their mother. The role of the conductors is very important: the first conductor sing and show the exercise, the second one help the mothers to do the right move. Children learn the right moves by playing. All activities are done by song to give rhythm to the movements. Parents and child spend several weeks at the institute. During this period they have a lot of activities, also during the care moments. In this way when they come home they can continue with the exercises

It is very difficult to summarize in a few lines the experience at the Peto Institute. I Think also we had a few times to look for everything. I could not see if the children have any time for the free playing or some moments to play or relate together.
I think it is a very important method of medical rehabilitation, but still have not understood the educational point of view.

On October 24, 2011 we visited the Peto Institute, in an easily reachable site, and there we could observe the application of the conductive education method.

Obviously we could only see a small part of the work provided, and we realize that we cannot give the complex opinion that this method would demand.

As far as mothers – children work is concerned they explained that they start with a residential three weeks full immersion, where conductors teach mothers how to interact with children, paying attention to the daily routines.

We could only see only the work in the gym and as far as we could observe, this method is based on stimulating the body to give correct answers, so that children will acquire the motricity necessary to adapt to the environment. Instruments used in this phase are various and very simple (chairs, sticks, ropes, puzzles etc.) so that the same kind of work may be done at home too.

As far as the activities of the observed integrated group, it is to be appreciated the structure of the classroom through the order of placement of games and ludic educational instruments in the classrom itself. From a certain point of view this is an easily traceable reference for children with different needs.

It is to be appreciated conductors’ technical organizative ability in establishing the child/group relation, intercrossing in the level of attention of the group “class” in relation with the conductor’s directions.

Unfortunately we could not verify the aspect of the ludic/didactic dimension in the free game, this being an important phase in the educational and rehabilitation iter of every single child, particularly children bearing different needs.

Techniques to be applied in a predefinite and precise setting are offered, more or less the same for everybody, a strong discipline is demanded.

Our impression is that the focus of this method is mostly rehabilitative, even if the work with the children is of fundamental importance for a complementary and consequent educational work.

The place is rather cold and aseptic: a big Institute and as such absolutely unfamiliar.

OBSERVATION CRITERIA - 2’ Draft

  1. INTERJÚ: Kérdések a szakemberekhez, intézményvezetőkhöz, azokban az intézményekben, ahová ellátogatunk

Questionary of institution management.

Szükséges eszközök: diktafon, videokamera. Ezekről a host visit-et szervező gondoskodik.

Equipment needed (provided by the host-visit organiser): dictaphone, video camera.

A kérdésekre adott válasz alapján a fogadó fél/ a találkozót szervező csapat feladata egy rövid összefoglaló/esszé elkészítése, angol nyelven.

Each visit (answers) should be summarised in English by the organiser/host in 1 page.

1. Magyarország másodikként írta alá (2007. június 20-án) az ENSZ Fogyatékossággal élő személyek jogairól szóló egyezményét. Milyen tapasztalatokat szerzett az eltelt idöszakban az inklúzió feltételeinek iztosítása terén? Hungary was the second country (on 20 June, 2007) who signed the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. What experiences do you have (on country level) in providing the conditions for inclusion?

2. Van-e olyan szakmai fórum, érdekképviseleti csoport ahol a gyakorlati tapasztalatok megbeszélésére, érdemleges továbbvitelére lehetősége van?

Do you have in your country a professional forum or advocacy group where experiences can be shared and discussed with other professionals and /or with the policy level?

3. Mióta szerepel az intézmény programjában az inklúzió?

How long time has been applied inclusion in the institution’s educational programme?

4. Milyen az intézményben dolgozó szakemberek összetétele, aránya? Van-e olyan szakember, akire szükség lenne az Ön intézményében, de jelenleg nincsen ilyen végzettségű kolléga? Milyen végzettségűek az itt dolgozó kollégák? Vannak-e továbbképzések?

Please describe the composition of professionals/specialists/experts (type, rate). Is there any expert who is not available but needed? Please describe the qualification of the experts/staff employed by the institution! Is there any further education/training programme available for your colleagues?

5. Hány gyerek jár az intézménybe? Ebből hány SNI? Kik és hányan dolgoznak azokban a csoportokban ahol SNI gyerekek vannak?

How many children attend your institution? Please specify the number of those who needs special education and describe the number of specialist working with children/young people with special needs!

6. Hogyan történik egy SNI gyermek/fiatal fogadása az intézménybe? Milyen előkészületeket végeznek a sikeres inklúzió érdekében? (Pedagógusok, szülők, társak számára). Van-e valamilyen protokoll, amit az intézmény az SNI gyerek/fiatal inklúziója érdekében követ? Ha igen, hol dokumentálják?

Please introduce the hosting of children/young people in the institution! What type of preparatory activities executed for successful integration/inclusion? (activities provided for parents, pedagogues, other children). Is there any special protocol used by the isnstitution for the inclusion of children/young people with special needs? If yes, how do you document this protocol?

7. Hogyan és ki dönt arról, hogy fogadja-e az intézmény az SNI gyermeket/fiatalt? Volt-e már példa arra, hogy elutasítottak egy felvételt? Ha igen, miért?

Who is the decision maker regarding the enrollment of a children with special needs? Please describe the procedure! Have you ever rejected the enrollment of a children/young person with special needs?

8. Nyomon követik-e az SNI gyerekeik/fiatalok életútját? Mik a tapasztalatok?

Is there any follow up parctice used for observing the life of those who left the institute? Waht are the experiences?

9. Ki a fenntartója az intézménynek? Az alapellátáson túl nyújtanak-e más szolgáltatásokat, ha igen, milyet? Ki finanszírozza ezeket?

Who is the sustainer of the isntitution (provides financial support)? Do you provide services besides the basic services? if yes, who gives the financial support of it?

10. Van-e szükség a szülők hozzájárulására, ha igen, ez milyen típusú és milyen mértékű? Más forrásból kapnak-e támogatást?

Do you require any contribution from parents? If yes, what kind of contribution (please describe), Do you have any other financial support? if yes, please detail the sources.

11. Van-e információja arról, hogy mennyire elterjedt az integráció/inklúzió iránti igény a sérült gyermeket nevelő szülök körében?

Do you have information about the need for integration/inclusion parctice among the parents growing up children with disabilities?

12. A speciális eszközöket, segédeszközöket miből finanszírozzák?

How do you finance the special equipments?

Képző vagy fiatal felnőtteket foglalkoztató intézmények esetében, az alábbi kérdésekkel egészítjük ki: In case of institution educate or employ young adults the below questions added:

1. Mennyire releváns a munkaerőpiac szempontjából az adott szakképzés? Van-e reális esély az elhelyezkedésre? Is the professional education of your institute/school relevant regrading the job market? Is this qualification provides real opportunities on the job market?

2. A képzés befejeztével segítik-e a sérült fiatal munka világába belépésének a folymatát? (interjúra felkészítés, álláskeresés, az állás megtartását segítő program, további képzések biztosítása)

Do you provide follow-up support of young people with special needs after the completition of the education? (prepare them for job interviews, assistance in job searching, further education programmes, mentoring)

3. Tudomása szerint, kapnak-e valamilyen támogatást,"kedvezményt" azok a munkáltatók, akik sérült fiatalokat foglalkoztatnak?

Do those employers receive any support who employ young people with disabilities? Examples: they have to pay less employer’s contribution; or part of the salary is provided by the state or local government etc.

If yes, please introduce these supports!

4. Szempontok az egyéni megfigyelésekhez, az ESSZÉ megírásához.

Criterias of individual observation (writing the summary)

Minden résztvevőnek az alábbi szempontok alapján kell megírnia a host visit tapasztalatait és közzétenni a blogon, a meetinget követő 3 héten belül.

Az esszé nem kell, hogy több legyen mint egy oldal és tartalmazhat fotókat (amennyiben engedélyt kapunk az adott intézményben a fotózásra), valamint linket is. Stílusa legyen közérthető és lehetőség szerint tartalmazzon személyes tapasztalatokat is.

Each participant should prepare the essay/summary according to the given criterias, and publish it on the blog within three weeks after the execution of the host visit. Lenght of the summary: 1 page with photos (if taking of photos allowed) and a link of the visited (?) institute. Please be clear and compherensive and include personel experinces.

Szükséges eszközök: papír, ceruza, fényképezőgép. Erről mindenki saját maga gondoskodik. The necessary devices should be brought by you: paper, pencil, camera.

Pld. Belváros-külváros, tömegközlekedés, más szolgáltató központok elérhetősége stb. Location of the institute in the city; inner city, outskirt, easy acces to public transportation, easy access to other services

UDVAR: ajtók, lépcsők, termek akadálymentesítettek-e, lehetővé teszik-e az önálló közlekedést? Garden/courtyard: doors, stairways, accessibilty of classrooms/ rooms allows independent moving

TEREM: berendezés jellemzői, bútorok, speciális eszközök vagy megoldások az SNI gyerekek számára

Pld: a polcon levő játék elérhető-e egy mozgássérült számára? Látássérült esetében van-e fényvisszaverő fólia stb.

Classroom /rooms features, furnitures, special equipments: toys can be easily reached on shelves, for visually impaired reflective foil is provided.

Dear Partners!
I hope all of you are excited to come to Budapest!
I would like to share some information with you.
Preparations and tasks before the meeting in Budapest:
• The observation criteria will help us to have a common way of thinking and observing. At the end it will help us to write the handbook of good practices

• Please prepare a presentation about your institute, strategies. Your colleagues have to present their own work in the institute. If you have any flyers, posters or short films do not hesitate to bring with you. Please inform us what kind of technical support you need.

• For the workshop at the Pető Institute, you have to prepare a short presentation
(PowerPoint or www.prezi.com) introducing your institution’s (organisation) inclusions strategies.
The presentation can not be longer than 10 minutes and we have 5 minutes for questions. You can keep your presentation in English or Hungarian. Interpretation will be provided!

• For English language proofreading you need to pay 50 EUR.

• We kindly ask you to decide the exact dates of the meeting you organise/host. It is very important for all of us to know the dates, for our future planning. Please communicate/publish the dates until the 18th of November on the common gmail account.

• Send us a short introductory of your institute/organisation in English (max. 1000 characters); and your logo.
• We are working in a European project so pay attention to use the European logo and the logo of the Leonardo da Vinci programme in your own communication too!
Practical info:
• The cost of meals will be paid by each participants/groups separately. A main course in Hungary it s around 10 EUR.
• We suggest you to buy a 3 day transport ticket (3 days BKV pass), that costs 3.000 HUF -11 EUR.
• At the Pető Institute where a workshop will be held you will find a “free” buffet. It is free in the sense that foods and drinks have no indicated price, but we kindly ask you to donate the buffet. Your donation will support the children

ARRIVAL IN BUDAPEST

You can find bellow some practical information for the Budapest ALL
INCLUSIVE meeting :

Travelling to and from the airport:

From the airport, to avoid any rip-off we recommend using the official
taxi company of the airport called Főtaxi.
They have a kiosk outside the terminal, where you can buy a voucher
for a flat rate of approximately 20/22 EUR, which then you can present
to the driver. You can also pay in EUR.
There are mini-bus taxis (shuttle) for 10 people, the cost is about 10
EUR approximately for each person (3.000 HUF hungaro forint).
Public transport is also good: by bus 200 in fornt of the terminal to
Kőbánya-Kispest metro station, then by metro line 3 (blue line) to
Nyugati tér, center of city.

Money matters:

The Hungarian currency is the forint (HUF or Ft) and there are coins
of 5Ft, 10Ft, 20Ft, 50Ft, 100Ft and 200Ft. Notes come in six
denominations: 500Ft, 1000Ft, 2000Ft, 5000Ft, 10,000Ft and 20,000Ft.
At present one EUR is about 290 HUF. Credit cards, especially Visa,
MasterCard and American Express, are widely accepted in Hungary, but
not in very small retail outlets.
You can change money at the best rate in private exchange offices,
which are everywhere around town. Look for the words valuta (foreign
currency) and váltó (exchange). In Hungary there are commission-free
currency exchange.
The change of the bank is not the best. Also the change in the airport
exchange office is not very good.
You can not change the coins, only notes.
It is also possible to pay in euros in many shops, but the change is
not only convenient and banknotes are accepted.
