ERNST BARLACH SCHOOLS
MUNICH, 16/12/2012
It is a private school, funded in part by one private foundation, PENNINGPARADE, and part of the region. Students pay about 100 euro per month.
Includes an elementary school and a high school. It is connected to other structures of the foundation, for exemple one hospital and one laboratory doe working people with disabilities.
The school was founded in 1969, later was approved by the state and therefore the students who attend get diplomas are valid for every high school and university (since 2009).
Since 1980 operates on the principle of integration of disabled students (about 60%).
All students must have sufficient cognitive skills towork well in school, because the school provides the school curriculum of all schools the German state. There is one „ test - admission interview” ( 2 or 3 days of observation) for everyone. It is mainly chosen by students with disabilities, but also for many students whitout special needs attracted by the small size of the classes and by the structure, as well as in some cases by the interest of the families to make an experience of integration to their children.
As mentioned earlier the program of study is that of public schools, teachers are teachers licensed to teach the different subjects and they are not „special teachers” for people with special needs.
The teachers are very motivated to their work, passionate about the issue of integration but do not have basic training in assisting disabled people. This passion was palpable during a visit to the school, during the lesson that we have seen. The teachers are about 40.
The teaching methodology of the school is based on the centrality of the student, and cooperation with the student and their families to raggiugere the result.
The areas of study are 3: arts and crafts, business and administration, social studies.
Classes have an average of 14-16 students, of which 60% with special needs.
The INTERMEDIATE SECONDARY SCHOOL is up to the tenth grade.
The UPPER ECONDAR SCHOOL is on 11 – 13 grade.
The school is in a neighborhood in the process of expansion, is equipped with many modern buildings, which were built for that purpose.
The main building has no architectural barriers, is on several floors. It is very bright and welcoming.
It is equipped with a swimming pool (with water level adjustable), gym. The sports activities are of great importance, for example, some students play in the National Paralympic basketball team.
During the activities in the pool there are lots of water polo teams integrated with disabilities-disabled.
The classroom doors are made of glass, for a decision in principle of transparency and openness. Each class has a second room, smaller one, connected and available for different activities.
The classes are equipped whit desks and blackboards suitable for all types of physical needs (adjustable eg for students in wheelchairs).
There is a library available for students but also for the residents in the neighborhood.
There is also a bar-restaurant and a book store.
In addition to teachers, many assistants working in the school.
The assistants are called by the teachers (with a phone in the hallway) at the time of need to help students with special needs. Remain in class on needed time and then leave the class.
These assistants are trained to help students of all classes in all subjects.
The academic performance of the students are in line with the average German, with few problems in mathematics.
In addition to the specific school facilities are available doctor's office, physical therapy, speech therapy, psychological services, social counseling center, sensory integrative teraphy and a project to help students after school in further education or entering the world of work.
The whole project revolves around the figure of the student with special needs, around which most working people.
